WHAT'S A ROOTED ATHLETE?

Rooted Athletes are carefully chosen young talents from the Antelope Valley who have demonstrated to Project Rooted that they’re ready for this sponsorship an opportunity to represent themselves and, most importantly, the youth of the AV.

Who will be the next Rooted Athlete?

Jorge Solorzano (Athlete)

Jorge Solorzano (Athlete)

Rooted Athlete | midfielder – Cal State University, Northridge | U-20 Guatemala National Team

“I’m proud to be born and raised in the Antelope Valley—it taught me that no matter where you come from, you can find a way to achieve your dreams.”

Career ▼

Jorge Solorzano’s soccer journey began on the fields of Palmdale, CA. As a freshman, he watched the varsity team from behind the goal and told himself that one day, he’d be out there too. Two years later, he led Palmdale High School to its first-ever CIF Championship, scoring a hat trick and an assist in the final and earning CIF Player of the Year honors. That moment was a turning point—proof that with hard work, faith, and determination, he could achieve more than he’d ever imagined.

Jorge has carried that mindset throughout his journey: helping his high school win three consecutive Golden League titles, leading them to the 2021 State Finals, and being named Offensive Player of the Year as a senior. Today, he’s a Division 1 soccer player at Cal State University Northridge and has represented the U-20 Guatemala National Team, earning recognition like Big West Freshman of the Year (2023) and Big West Second Team (2024).

Role ▼

As a Rooted Athlete, Jorge is living proof that the AV’s best talent can compete anywhere. He’s committed to sharing his story, leading by example, and showing the next generation that the dream is within reach.

Rooted Athlete | Defender – UC Irvine | Captain – El Salvador U20 National Team

“I’m grateful to represent the AV and show that even coming from a small city, you can reach the highest level if you stay rooted, disciplined, and believe in yourself.”

Career ▼

My name is Darwin Lopez, and I’m a defender for the University of California, Irvine, captain of the El Salvador U-20 National Team. I was born and raised in Palmdale, CA, where my soccer journey started at local fields like Lancaster Soccer Complex and Pelona Vista.

At 11, I began traveling weekly to compete with top clubs like West Coast Elite FC and LA Surf MLS Next, knowing I needed tougher competition to grow. My journey took me to the New England Revolution’s MLS Academy and eventually to represent El Salvador internationally, experiences that tested and shaped me.

Role ▼

I’m honored to be one of the first Rooted Athletes because I believe in the mission: to create opportunities so that future kids in the AV don’t have to leave home to chase their dreams. The AV has so much talent, but we need leaders and mentors to give back and show the way. I’m committed to being that example, proving that with hard work, belief, and community, anything is possible.
